Don’t Visit These 10 Famous Places in Japan Over 50 (Until You Know This)

You've seen the photograph a hundred times: a tunnel of orange gates up a hillside in Kyoto, like a gentle walk through a wood. It isn't. It's a mountain, two to three hours, and thousands of steps. I watched a great many couples in their sixties set off up those gates in the afternoon heat, and come back down having had the worst day of their holiday.
Not one of these ten places is off your list. Every one is worth seeing. If a famous sight has ever left you exhausted, it isn't your fault: nobody puts the one fact that matters in the guidebook. I spent 37 years at a hotel concierge desk in Tokyo, sending people to these ten places and hearing about it when they came back.
🔟 The Golden Pavilion: why it should never get an afternoon
9️⃣ Meiji Jingu: the walk before you see anything
8️⃣ Nara Park: what the deer video doesn't show you
7️⃣ Arashiyama bamboo grove: the hour that changes everything
6️⃣ teamLab: the one question to ask at the door
5️⃣ Kiyomizudera: the opening time almost nobody knows
4️⃣ Chureito Pagoda and Mount Fuji: the number nobody mentions
3️⃣ Himeji Castle: why the best view is from outside the gate
2️⃣ The floating gate at Miyajima: the only problem here is the moon
1️⃣ Fushimi Inari: how to get the better view in 40 minutes instead of 3 hours
🗒️ Mariko's cheat sheet
Kinkakuji is a 15 to 45 minute visit. Go at 9 am and add Ryoanji and Ninnaji on the same road
Meiji Jingu: plan an hour. Gravel paths, quieter entrance near Yoyogi station
Nara: one packet of crackers, then show open hands. Zip your map away, the deer eat paper
Arashiyama bamboo: be there at 7 am. The Monkey Park is a real uphill climb
teamLab: barefoot, water to the knee, mirror floors. Walking sticks allowed, detour routes on request
Kiyomizudera: taxi up the hill, walk down the stone lanes
Chureito Pagoda: early morning, winter or early spring for the clearest Fuji. Take the steps in stages
Himeji: the steep keep climbs are in socks. Kokoen garden next door is flat and beautiful
Miyajima: check the tide table before you book the day
In the book: chapter 1 (what Japan asks of you), chapter 22 (getting around a city and the Kyoto bus problem), chapter 34 (the Kyoto days, hour by hour)
💬 Which of these ten is top of your list, and had you heard any of this about it? I have a feeling it will be the gates. I read every single one.
If someone you know has Kyoto on their list, send them this before they plan the day.
