OCEAN TWILIGHT ZONE | Why Billions of Creatures Rise Every Night

Blue Expanse36回視聴投稿日: 2026/11/06
Every night, as sunlight fades across the ocean, billions of marine creatures begin an extraordinary journey. From hundreds of meters below the surface, countless fish, crustaceans, and other small animals rise through the darkness toward the waters above. By sunrise, many will have returned to the depths. This remarkable phenomenon, known as diel vertical migration, is considered the largest animal migration on Earth. Yet despite its enormous scale, most of it happens completely beyond human sight. Deep within the ocean twilight zone, roughly 200 to 1,000 meters beneath the surface, life follows a delicate balance between hunger and survival. Lanternfish, krill, squid, and countless other organisms move between different layers of the ocean, taking advantage of nighttime feeding opportunities while reducing their exposure to certain predators. But the darkness does not guarantee safety. As migrating animals approach shallower waters, they become part of a shifting food web that attracts larger hunters. Their movements influence feeding behavior across the ocean, connecting animals that may occupy very different depths during the day. And this journey has consequences far beyond feeding. By carrying organic matter into deeper waters, migrating animals contribute to the biological carbon pump, helping transport carbon and nutrients through the ocean's vast interior. From the fading light of sunset to the first moments of dawn, explore the hidden rhythms, survival strategies, and extraordinary natural processes shaping life beneath the waves.
