ZEN — 禅: the practice of just sitting. Dogen, who brought the Soto school of Zen to Japan in the 1200s, taught shikantaza — "just sitting." You don't sit in order to get something. The sitting is the whole practice. One modern Japanese guide puts it simply: don't overthink it, just sit. Picture a monk on the veranda of a mountain temple late at night: back straight, hands resting in his lap, the moss garden silver in the moonlight. You can sit with him for a while — and when you are ready, lie down and let the night carry you. As a Japanese creator, I made this 2+ hour soundscape of koto and shakuhachi over a soft drone for a quiet night — to unwind, rest, and drift toward sleep.
