Cotton Ball Fire Starters: Vaseline Inside vs. Outside — Which Works Better?

Does it matter whether you put Vaseline inside or outside a cotton ball when making homemade fire starters? In this Outdoor Gear & Skills experiment, I compare two methods: Unrolling cotton balls, applying Vaseline inside, and rolling them back up. Applying Vaseline directly to the outside. The results were interesting! The cotton ball with Vaseline on the outside appeared to produce a slightly taller flame, but both methods burned for approximately the same amount of time. However, there's another factor worth considering: the mess. Cotton balls coated with Vaseline can leave residue inside storage containers like an Altoids tin, and handling them can leave petroleum jelly all over your fingers.
