I've mentioned in previous videos that I've always liked the idea of blackout blinds for your ears. Something that could help shut out the little noises that interrupt your sleep, just as blackout blinds keep unwanted light out of your bedroom. Well, I've been experimenting with that idea again, but this time I've added something that I think makes it work particularly well: rain. This is Blackout Rain, a deep, continuous sleep sound that combines the darker frequencies and sound-masking techniques I've developed over several recordings with layers of real rainfall recorded here in my garden in Kent. The foundation is a blend of low harmonic tones, flowing brown noise and carefully filtered sound textures. I've used singing bowl harmonics, low-frequency MIDI tones and some of my hydrophone and fabric recordings to build a dense, warm sound that sits comfortably in the background. The idea is to reduce the contrast between the sound you're listening to and the unpredictable noises happening around you. Our brains continue to process sound while we're asleep, and sudden changes in our acoustic environment can sometimes disturb us. A consistent background sound can help make those interruptions less noticeable. For this recording, I've blended several of my own rainfall recordings captured using Sennheiser and Tascam equipment set up in my garden here in Kent. Each recording has a slightly different character, from softer, distant rainfall to the fuller sound of rain landing on nearby surfaces. Rather than simply placing the rain on top of the existing sound, I've worked it into the frequency balance of the whole recording. I used EQ and filtering to soften some of the sharper, higher-frequency details in the rainfall, while making room for the deeper harmonic layers underneath. I also adjusted the relative levels and dynamic range so the rain remains present without constantly drawing attention to itself. The result is a darker, fuller rain sound than you'd get from a straightforward field recording. The rainfall provides a familiar, natural texture, while the low-frequency layers and shaped noise help maintain a steady acoustic background. I've also been careful with the overall loudness. Sound masking isn't about drowning everything else out. It's about making the difference between the background and an occasional outside noise less pronounced, while keeping the listening level comfortable. That's really the thinking behind Blackout Rain. A familiar rainy-night atmosphere, but with quite a bit of sound engineering going on underneath to make it more consistent and less distracting over twelve hours. If you're someone who enjoys falling asleep to rain but finds ordinary rainfall recordings a little too bright or changeable, I think you'll particularly enjoy this one. Sleep long and sleep well, my friends.
