How to Ride the Shinkansen in Japan (2026): Tickets, Seats, JR Pass and Luggage Rules
Riding the Japan bullet train for the first time, and not sure which ticket, which train, or whether the JR Pass is worth it?
Think of the Shinkansen as a flight, without the airport: pick your flight, hold your boarding pass, find your gate, take your seat. This guide covers Shinkansen tickets, smartEX booking, reserved vs unreserved seats, the JR Pass, luggage rules and the best seat for Mount Fuji.
In this video:
・Nozomi, Hikari or Kodama: the three kinds of trains on the Tokaido Shinkansen, and why the Nozomi is usually the one to take
・Shinkansen tickets: the fare ticket plus the express ticket, and booking online with smartEX in English (opens 10 a.m. Japan time, 30 days ahead)
・Reserved vs unreserved seats: Tokyo to Shin-Osaka on the Nozomi, 14,720 yen vs 13,870 yen in the regular season
・Is the JR Pass worth it? The 7-day pass rose to 53,000 yen from Oct 1, 2026, and the Nozomi needs an extra ticket (4,960 yen Tokyo to Kyoto)
・The holiday trap: every Nozomi is fully reserved from Dec 25, 2026 to Jan 5, 2027, and an unreserved ticket means standing
・Shinkansen gates: two paper tickets in the slot together, QR codes and IC cards, and finding your car on the platform
・Shinkansen luggage rules: the 160 cm and 250 cm limits, the free oversized baggage seat, and sending your suitcase ahead
・Food and Mount Fuji: ekiben before you board, and seat E (Green Car seat D) for a view of Fuji
Prices, dates and rules are as of October 2026 and can change. Check the official sites before you book.
