On May 10, 2025, police in Travelers Rest, South Carolina, investigated a report that a man had claimed to be a sheriff’s deputy to obtain a free car wash. According to the attendant, the man arrived in a silver Ford Taurus equipped to resemble a police vehicle and identified himself as working with the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Division. The attendant told officers that he allowed the man through the wash without collecting payment because he believed he was a law enforcement officer. Officers reviewed surveillance footage, checked the vehicle information, and collected a written statement describing the encounter. After obtaining two arrest warrants, police located the man working at a nearby Walmart. Officers approached him, placed him in handcuffs, and explained the allegations. The man, identified during the encounter as Jeffrey, denied claiming to be a deputy and said he had intended to pay for the car wash. An officer read the warrant alleging that he had identified himself as a member of the warrants division while occupying a vehicle fitted with a light bar, spotlight, and push bumper. A second warrant concerned driving under suspension. Jeffrey told officers that he had insurance. An officer explained that the charge concerned his suspended driver’s licence and that having insurance did not resolve the suspension recorded by the DMV. After placing him inside a patrol vehicle, officers advised him of his Miranda rights and questioned him about the car wash encounter. Jeffrey continued to deny identifying himself as a law enforcement officer. Officers also examined the Ford Taurus and discussed equipment including a vest, badge, radio, handcuffs, and a personally purchased body camera. WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? Officers arrested Jeffrey on two warrants alleging: Impersonating a law enforcement officer Driving under suspension Police stated that the vehicle and its contents would be seized as evidence. According to the video’s closing narration, Jeffrey was booked into the Greenville County Detention Center and released on bond the following day. The final court disposition has not been independently verified. The footage documents the investigation and enforcement decisions, not a final determination of guilt.
