15 Things Retired NYPD Detectives Want Women Living Alone TO DO Every Night
15 Things Retired NYPD Detectives Want Women Living Alone TO DO Every Night
The first winter after Frankie died, I ran the dryer at eleven o'clock every night. Cheaper electric after nine, and if I'm honest, the noise was company. Four months of that. Then my friend Eddie came by for coffee. Thirty years in the FDNY. He heard the dryer going, put his cup down, pulled the machine out from the wall and looked at the hose behind it. Then he looked at me. I haven't run that dryer after dark since. Nobody tells you any of this when you start living alone, so I asked the people I used to work beside: the firefighters, the EMTs, the ER nurses, and fourteen years of my own burglary cases.
I'm Jackie Shaw. I spent 33 years on the job, 14 of them working burglaries in Queens. These are the 15 things they all wish we'd do every night, and most of them cost nothing.
In this video, I count down all 15, including:
🔑 Number fifteen: the dryer you leave running
🔑 Number fourteen: a ten-cent piece of plastic that stops a coat hanger from opening your garage in six seconds
🔑 Number thirteen: the one word a stranger at your door is listening for
🔑 The smoke alarm you'd sleep through, and carbon monoxide
🔑 Your purse and car keys in the bedroom, and a lit path to the bathroom
🔑 Number one: the noise at two in the morning
You are allowed to call about a noise that turns out to be nothing.
