Nobody warns you about the little things. The jar lid you can't get off, with nobody to hand it to. The light bulb in the hallway that stays burnt out for three weeks because the ladder feels like a bad idea. The evening the phone doesn't ring once. None of it is an emergency. But it adds up, and one day one of your children looks around your kitchen and says, "Mom, maybe you shouldn't be living here by yourself."
In this video I share the 10 things that made living alone easier for me after 70, and the one I wish I'd done years before I finally got around to it. I spent 35 years as a CPA, and I approached living alone the way I approached a client's books: find the small problems before they turn into big ones.
I'll be honest with you up front, the way I always am. Living alone after 70 does come with real risks, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise. It isn't right for everybody, and some of the people who love you are worried for good reasons. But most of those risks can be made much smaller, and a lot of the fixes cost little or nothing.
I tell you the changes I made around the house so the things I use every day are easy to reach and easy to see. I share the simple daily check-in that lets my family stop worrying without hovering. I talk about how I keep groceries, medications and appointments from becoming a juggling act, and how I keep living alone from turning into being lonely. And I tell you why getting my paperwork in order made me feel more independent, not less. Falls are the biggest danger for anyone living alone at our age, so have a way to call for help that you can reach from the floor. I'm not a doctor, so talk with yours about anything specific to your health.
Nobody makes any money when you stay in your own home and do just fine. That's why you hear so much more about the risks than about the fixes.
Tell me in the comments: if you live alone, what's one thing you've done that made it easier? And tell me if you're watching for yourself or for a parent. I read every single one.
