When Cruises Go Wrong

A cruise is the kind of holiday where you’re supposed to let go and relax - but occasionally something goes wrong. Cruising still relies on the good graces of mother nature and the common sense of the ship’s officers and crew. We all know about the Costa Concordia - but in recent years there have been a few dramatic disasters that sank cruise ships and marooned their passengers. And in the decades and centuries before that pleasure ships were in the middle of some absolutely horrific disasters. From the tragic Princess Alice, rammed and sunk in the Thames at the exact moment millions of litres of wastewater was released nearby - the Eastland, a day tripping excursion ship built so topheavy she rolled over in the middle of downtown Chicago killing hundreds - the Marchioness, a 1980s partyboat run down and destroyed by a barge in the heart of London - the World Discoverer, an expedition ship that tore its underside out and was run aground in a tropical paradise - Star Princess, a new sleek cruise ship that suddenly caught on fire - and finally the Explorer an Antarctic-rated ship taken down by an iceberg in an incident that could have killed dozens. Oceanliner Designs explores the design, construction, engineering and operation of history’s greatest vessels– from Titanic to Queen Mary and from the Empress of Ireland to the Lusitania. Join maritime researcher and illustrator Michael Brady as he tells the stories behind some of history's most famous ocean liners and machines!
