Ever since opening the world’s first true high-speed rail back in 1964, Japan has been ahead of the pack when it comes to innovative transportation and blistering speed. Now, more than half a century later, it is poised to stun the world all over again. The historic Tokaido Shinkansen - the very line which first introduced us to the term “bullet train” - is undergoing a major expansion. The expansion will initially run from Tokyo to Nagoya, then later on all the way from Tokyo to Osaka. And it will cover the roughly 500-kilometer distance in less than half the time of the original high-speed train, making Japan once again the home of the world’s fastest commercial train. In this episode of Looking 4, we’ll be taking an in-depth look at this groundbreaking development in transportation. We’ll study the almost magician-like technology that allows this train to move so fast, so reliably. We’ll gather the available evidence to see what this new rail line will look like in practice and how it will impact Japanese society. And we’ll even try to take a step aboard and get a sense of what it will be like to travel 500 kilometers per hour on a cozy passenger train. Welcome, friends, to Chuo Shinkansen.
