Look up, the night is still beautiful. 🍁 A quiet temple garden in Japan on an autumn night. The maples have turned deep red and orange, and soft lights below the trees make them glow against the dark blue hills. A still pond holds every color like a mirror, and small lanterns burn warmly along the stone path. A wandering ronin sits on the edge of a wooden veranda beside the water, back straight, hands resting on his knees, his chin lifted toward the glowing leaves and his eyes closed. His hat and sword are set down beside him. The day is over. There is nothing left he has to do. This piece is inspired by "YOMOMIJI" (夜紅葉) — the Japanese word for autumn maples seen at night, lit softly from below. In late autumn, temples across Japan light their gardens after dark, and people walk slowly through them in the cold air, simply to look up. Some days end heavier than they began. You may be tired, and the night may feel like something to get through. But the leaves are still glowing, and the water is still holding the light. For a little while, you can stop and look. Shakuhachi breathes low and warm, like cool night air moving through the garden. Koto falls in soft, glowing notes, like red leaves landing on still water.
